I was pulled over because my tag lights were out at 11:30 PM. The cop asked if I had anything to drink. Told him I had had 2 beers with dinner like 5 hours ago.
He asked me to take my glasses off then he holds up his pen and asks if I can see the tip of the pen. I’m like nope can’t see shit without my glasses.
Spent some quality time replacing my burnt out LED bulbs. The screws really are a pain in the ass to get to. I had to use my ratchet with a Phillips bit in a 1/4" socket.

Cops are just... Ugh.

Wh ... why would he ask that?

That’s not fun.
Those screws don’t look like fun, either - - no doubt a lot more work than it ought to be.

I don’t know. Sounds like he was doing his job.

Some are worse than others. This is a college town so they’re pulling anyone over for any reason. I can think of 4 separate occasions I have been pulled over for something like this in this town. Headlight out on Saturday night? You’re getting pulled over.

Because it’s 11:30pm after the Super Bowl. However, absent any sign of impaired driving, pulling somebody over for a busted tail light is nothing more than a fishing expedition. They can’t legally profile, so they do the next best thing and pull people over for a lane change without a signal, burned out plate light, etc. I got stopped twice in the same night for a burned out headlight, but it was late Saturday night and the cops were looking for drunks. Good reason to make sure that your equipment is in order at all times.

Was it just the pen, or did you have to walk the line and say the alphabet backwards? Hell, I can’t even do that when I’m sober.

The test consisted of me following the end of his pen so I needed to be able see where it was. He moved it much closer and shined a light on it so I could kinda tell where it was.

I was driving home from a concert in Victoria TX to Austin late one Saturday night and I got pulled over by a state trooper because my headlight was out. I had no idea. Probably since I was white and wearing a suit, he gave me a warning. About 20 minutes later, I was driving through Luling when my radar detector alerted and a cop passed me going the other way. When I saw him loop around, I just pulled over. He came up and asked if I knew I had a headlight out and I showed him the warning and said, “Yeah, the trooper in Gonzales just told me.” We had a good laugh and he let me go. I wondered how many more times I’d get stopped on that drive, but that was it. As I said to somebody else, it’s all a fishing expedition on the part of the cops, and it pays to keep your equipment in order.

Wouldn’t you rather the cop be safe than sorry. Nothing out of the ordinary. Driver admitted to drinking, cop administered test, driver passed, driver on with (assuming) a warning to get his tag lights fixed. No harm no foul. I for one would be happy to oblige for the piece of mind knowing that the police are doing the best they can to keep drunk drivers off the road.

It was my first field sobriety test so I can cross that off my list.
Ithink they might be the Japanese screws theones that are like Phillips. My stubby driver kept camming out on me.

Yeah me too. I guess he needed to watch my eyes and they obscure his view of them.

And hopefully your last. I haven’t had that pleasure, although I’ve witnessed a few.
Anything on a tailgate can be a PITA - it’s the first thing that rusts on cars around Chicago, because the salt collects back there. Looks like that wasn’t too bad on yours at least.

Love the preemptive pull over. I did that to a cop once that had been following me for awhile. Probably not the best idea.

I had the pen, had to say my alphabet without singing from D to T and count backwards from 35 to 19.

oooh, dont forget the touch your nose with your head leaned back, or count to to 10 while standing on one foot......

Like I said, I couldn’t do that sober.

Well, I did pull into an empty, well-lit parking lot. But yeah, I probably should have waited till he lit me up. But I just knew he was coming for me.

I just don’t understand how they get a job half the time. Our cops pull people over in turn lane, around blind corners, blocking entire entrances to neighborhoods... And a bunch of them are jerks.

The lack of common sense in the police departments is scary.

JIS drive screws. You need a good Vessel driver ! They’re superb and I find them to fit not only JIS screws but also phillips heads better than any other driver I’ve owned.

An officer would turn their lights on when they realize something amiss. It’s usually the driver of the car that stops somewhere stupid because they’re too busy panicking to think straight.

A cop can request that a car go ahead and move though... It‘s not that hard.

Yeah I need some nice drivers.

I had that as well. I was about to go up a hill in the WRX and dropped a gear, got a little speed which I was going to burn off just coasting up the hill. The cop just happened to be right there at the wrong time. We had just come from a restaurant and the last thing I did was finish my beer. he could smell it. He had me step out and do some counting and the last test was say the alphabet but not singing. I was 100% until i got to the end and said STUVWRXYZ. oops. They didn’t see any need to test further, and let me go with a warning. This was also Valentine’s day and i had another couple n the back seats. MY wife was less than impressed with the WRX that day (she always hated that car, i think she was jealous.)

One of my high school friends got pulled over driving me home because we had a huge hill on our road. He had to pick up a lot of steam in his crappy jeep to get up it. After the stop we had to turn around because we lost all momentum.

My uncle came to visit me at college once. He was a couple of hours late because he kept getting pulled over in full felony stop style - get out of the car, hands up, lay down on the ground, etc.
His car matched the description of a car used in a bank robbery and every cop between his house and the campus (over an hour away) decided to be a hero.

Time to park it for a couple of hours.

Yeah I’m not upset I got pulled over but it was inconvenient. I think most cops would not have given a field sobriety in this case. He seems like a young eager beaver rookie or was told to field sobriety test anyone they pull over.

This was back before cell phones, so I had no idea what was going on. You’re right though, he should have stopped somewhere and had lunch. Preferably at a place with a pay phone.

A friend of mine at church is a CHP officer and he has these glasses that make you walk like a drunk. No kidding. I’ve seen men who have never even
smelled
alcohol in their entire lives look like they’re soused.

I picked up this 4 piece set from Amazon (by
Hozan
). The Vessel drivers are a bit nicer (nicer handle and some added features), but are more expensive.
